It’s time to unite

I don’t think anyone in the Labour Party was expecting this week to be a good one. Here in Brighton, we’re still awaiting the results of the European Parliamentary elections for the South East region.

On Thursday, I joined dozens of other Labour activists in Brighton to get Labour votes out. Election days are always a flurry of activity and I spent Thursday on the phone and on the doorstep talking to voters. It’s always a reminder that what’s going on in peoples’ everyday lives isn’t always what’s on the front of the newspapers.

Of course, there is some criticism of the government, but talking to people outside the bubble of the Westminster Village it’s clear to me that people are much more concerned about the issues than the personalities. People are worried about keeping their homes, keeping their jobs and tackling the recession. Labour has a great story to tell and lots of positive measures are already underway.

I’ve also been out again drumming up support for the Fair Tips campaign, protecting the minimum wage for people who work in bars, cafes and restaurants. It’s a really practical example of how Labour can make a difference to working people and ensure that waiting staff are getting the customer tips they deserve. Again, I have been supported by Labour members and activists who give their time freely to help make a positive change. I’m really grateful for all their hard work.

And that’s why I’m disappointed with some former members of the cabinet. Those of us who have been out campaigning have been working hard to win every single Labour vote. Many members I’ve spoken to are furious at the actions and timing of Hazel Blears and James Purnell who have been undermining our efforts.

I went on the BBC Politics Show on Friday to call on all Labour MPs and Cabinet Ministers to unite. Now, more than ever, we need to be talking to our local party members and understanding what’s happening on the ground. We need to get back in touch with the real issues that matter to people on the doorstep and offer a clear vision for the future.
