March Update: Coldean Colts and other news

Thursday 12 March
Popped in to see plans for new American Express building – disappointed to find out that new building doesn’t mean more jobs.

Friday 13 March
Cup of tea with representatives of Churches Together in Sussex and was introduced to the food sharing project.

Back to the office to catch up on letter and emails before joining CWU outside Churchill Square to hand out leaflets opposing the privatisation of the Royal Mail.

Saturday 14 March
Headed up to Coldean first thing to see the Coldean Colts in action. Whilst doing a ring round to find out about the issues important to residents in Coldean, I spoke to some parents who had set up the Coldean Colts youth football team. Featured in The Argus, the club has proved so popular that now over 75 youngsters turn up each week for a game. There are several squads so the smaller children can play with otherkids their own size.

The Coldean Colts play at Coldean School, but the pitches are badly in need of maintenance and the children need somewhere to change, especially after particularly muddy games. The club is trying to raise money, although I was shocked to hear that they had already had to pay over £400 of their hard-earned cash just to apply for planning permission for portacabins.

I have written to Brighton and Hove City Council to find out what they can do to help with funding – strikes me it would be one of the things they could bid for from the £9m of Government money they turned down.

Out in the afternoon door-knocking with residents from Carlyle Street getting more people signed up to our campaign to stop large vehicles using the street as a cut through to Queen’s Park Road – their windows are rattling! I loved the story they told me about building a line of snowmen to block the road off recently! After consuming a huge piece of chocolate birthday cake, I headed down to the launch of the local Labour LGBT group in the Charles Street Bar before finishing up with a quick pint of real ale at Hove Beer Festival.
