Supporting Trade Unionists in Zimbabwe

Back in June I sent my photo to the TUC as part of their campaign to support two trade unionists who were being persecuted in Zimbabwe. I thought you might be interested in the following email I received today from the TUC.

“Thanks again for your help with the mosaic in support of Wellington Chibebe and Lovemore Matombo of the ZCTU. We had a great response and were able to use nearly all of the photos that were sent in as part of the mosaic.

We thought you might like to know the mosaic is being featured now as part of a new solidarity site from the ITUC, www.wearezctu.org . You can now zoom in to the image to find yourself in greater detail.

The reason for the new site is not a happy one though. Lovemore and Wellington's trial was postponed until this coming Wednesday - 30 July. Their draconian bail conditions have continued during this time, infringing their human rights to speak out about their situation.

A lot hangs in the balance on Wednesday, and the ITUC hopes many unionists will visit the site, adding their messages of support, and crucially helping to spread the word as much as possible around the web, using services like digg or Facebook.

Let's show that the eyes of the world are on the court in Harare, and see if we can get the charges dropped against our ZCTU colleagues.

Please take a second now to find out how you can help, and zoom in to see yourself in the mosaic at: www.wearezctu.org

David Lepper MP and I have also written a joint letter to the Home Secretary calling for reassurance that Zimbabwean asylum seekers will not be forced back to their country at such a dangerous time.
