I met with national officers of Unite the Union today. They are supporting me to stand for Parliament. We had a chat about their ‘Fair Tips’ campaign which I am supporting in Brighton Pavilion. The problem is that under the minimum wage law, employers are allowed to count tips towards the minimum wage calculation. Most chains of restaurants are applying this system and it’s very unfair on hardworking waiting staff. They should be paid their wages and allowed to keep the tips for themselves. Clearly this loophole needs to be closed. If you want to support the campaign please get in touch or visit the Unite website at www.unitetheunion.com.
