Today I was out in Coldean meeting residents and met a Dad who was concerned about activities for young people. I told him about the Labour Government’s new ‘myplace’ programme. I want Brighton and Hove City Council to bid for a share of funding from the new £190 million national pot, which could see new facilities for young people to take part in activities after school and at weekends, such as music, sport, dance and drama.
The ‘myplace’ programme is in addition to dedicated funding from the Labour Government for youth projects in Brighton and Hove. Over the next three years, Brighton and Hove will already receive £1,340,630 as part of the Positive Activities for Young People, Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Funds.
The most important thing is that young people themselves help to decide what sort of facilities are provided – whether that’s a new youth centre, a skate park, sports facilities or somewhere they can go to do drama or music.
