Off to the opening of Coldean Library first thing this morning. I think the addition of the library in this area, close to the café and shops creates a real centre for the community.

The library is beautiful inside with a dedicated children’s section with a colourful carpet and lots of bright cushions. It was a pleasure to see some of the children sit down straight away and start reading books – they obviously felt very much at home. I wondered if I’d get away with joining them for a couple of hours!
The library also has a separate meeting room, kitchen area and lots of pc workstations. It’s a fantastic facility and I’m proud that it was built by funding from our Labour Government.
After the opening, I went door-knocking with other Labour Party members in Withdean and then after a bit of lunch at The Cleveland we went to meet people at Blaker’s Park Picnic. It was a very windy day and the photo shows me helping to rescue a cake stall from blowing over! There were even more people and stalls than last year – the Friends of Blaker’s Park have done a great job keeping people interested in the park.
I went with Cllr Kevin Allen to take a look at the crossing in Preston Drove as a local resident had raised concerns about how effective it is.
After the Blaker’s Park Picnic it was off to see one of the new Eco open houses in the New England Quarter. Although I was impressed with the facilities, I think the price will be prohibitive to the average wage earner in Brighton.
The day ended with a welcome phone call from the Friends of Blaker’s Park telling me I had won a basket of fruit in the raffle!
