David Lepper, the Labour MP for Brighton Pavilion, will be standing down at the next election after more than 10 years of remarkable service.
In his place at the next general election will be Nancy Platts, who was selected as Labour candidate by party members in June.
David said: "I know that Nancy Platts will be an excellent MP for Brighton Pavilion. She has a great record as a campaigner on important national issues such as transport policy, employment rights, women, health and equality, childcare and child poverty.
"She understands the problems and the strengths of our Brighton community and will make sure the concerns of local people are heard in parliament. I am pleased to have the chance to work with her to help ensure a Labour victory under Gordon Brown's leadership at the next election."
Nancy paid tribute to David's remarkable achievements on behalf of local people. "It is an enormous privilege to be chosen by local people to be the candidate to replace David. And I promise to work tirelessly to be a worthy successor," she said.
